North Star
A living document defining where Objectuve is headed, why it exists, and how we'll know we're getting there.
Why This Exists
I built the first version of Objectuve in 2019. About a thousand people used it. They created five thousand goals. The numbers were small, but the signal was clear — people wanted a tool that made consistency feel rewarding, and nothing in the market did that well.
Then life happened. I shelved it for six years.
During those six years, the app industry got worse. The products people use daily are designed to hold them hostage — infinite scroll, algorithmic FOMO, dark patterns dressed up as "engagement." The habit trackers that emerged were either bare-bones streak counters or RPG games that punished you for missing a day. None of them felt like something built for the person using it.
I came back to Objectuve because I needed it myself — and because I still believe what I believed in 2019: that an app can be profitable, widely used, and genuinely good for the people who open it. That gamification can serve people instead of exploiting them. That a company can encode those beliefs into its legal structure and prove the model works.
Objectuve is a Public Benefit Company. That's not a marketing label — it's a legal commitment that user wellbeing can never be sacrificed for growth. This document is the map for how we get there.
Vision
Objectuve becomes the default tool people reach for when they want to get serious about a goal — not because it's the most powerful, but because it's the most rewarding to use consistently.
We optimize for goals achieved. Never for time-on-app.
North Star Metric: Goals Completed
Every decision we make ladders up to one number: cumulative goals completed across the platform. This is the metric that directly measures our mission ("help people stay consistent with what matters to them"). Not signups, not DAU, not session time — goals completed.
Why this metric:
- It's the only number that proves we're helping people accomplish real things
- It can't be gamed without users actually doing the work
- It aligns every team (product, growth, AI coaching) around user outcomes
- It's the number we'll publish in annual PBC impact reports
Trajectory:
| Horizon | Goals Completed (cumulative) |
|---|---|
| 6 months (Oct 2026) | 2,500 - 10,000 |
| 1 year (Apr 2027) | 25,000 - 75,000 |
| 3 years (Apr 2029) | 500,000 - 1,500,000 |
| 5 years (Apr 2031) | 2,000,000 - 10,000,000 |
Positioning
We occupy a market position no one else holds: deep gamification + social accountability + anti-addictive design. The competitive landscape splits into gamified apps that are individual-only (Duolingo, Forest, Streaks) and social accountability apps with no gamification (Stickk, Beeminder, Coach.me). The intersection — gamified social accountability — is empty. We own it.
This positioning evolves as the product matures:
| Phase | Positioning | Audience |
|---|---|---|
| Now (2026) | Gamified social accountability for goal-pursuers | Early adopters: Habitica refugees, Duolingo model seekers, minimalist upgraders, privacy-conscious users |
| Growth (2027-2028) | The rewarding way to achieve your goals | Broader consumer: anyone who sets goals and wants to stick with them |
| Scale (2029+) | The goal achievement platform | Ecosystem: individuals, teams, organizations, developers, researchers |
Positioning statement: For goal-pursuing adults who struggle with consistency, Objectuve is a gamified goal-tracking platform that turns daily effort into visible, rewarding progression through XP, badges, ranks, and community accountability. Unlike habit trackers with bare streak counters, RPG apps with punitive mechanics, or commitment platforms with financial penalties, Objectuve combines Duolingo-depth gamification with positive-reinforcement social accountability in an anti-addictive, privacy-respecting design.

How Users Find Us
Objectuve's first 1,000 users will come from three channels, in order of priority. Paid acquisition is explicitly off the table for the initial phase — organic traction is the signal we need before spending money.
1. App Store Optimization (Primary)
The app stores are where goal-pursuing people already search. Ranking for the right keywords is the highest-leverage, lowest-cost acquisition channel.
Keyword targets: "goal tracker", "habit tracker", "gamified goals", "goal setting app", "streak tracker", "accountability app"
Tactics:
- Keyword-optimized title, subtitle, and description for iOS and Android
- Screenshot set showing the gamification loop (streak, badge unlock, level-up, community)
- A/B test store listing variants (Creative Sets on iOS, Store Listing Experiments on Android)
- Early review generation — prompt engaged users (7+ day streak) for app store review
- Monitor keyword rankings via AppFollow or Sensor Tower (free tier)
Success signal: Appearing in top 50 results for "goal tracker" and "habit tracker" within 3 months of launch.
2. Community Seeding (Secondary)
People who set goals and talk about consistency online are the early adopter audience. Meet them where they are.
Target communities:
- Reddit: r/getdisciplined (1.2M+), r/productivity (2.5M+), r/selfimprovement (1.3M+), r/DecidingToBeBetter
- ProductHunt: timed launch with gamification angle ("Duolingo for life goals")
- Indie Hacker/Maker communities: Indie Hackers, Hacker News (Show HN), Twitter/X maker community
- Goal-setting forums: Goalcast, accountability groups on Facebook/Discord
Approach: Lead with the story (PBC, anti-social app, founder rebuilding after 6 years), not the pitch. Share progress publicly. Be a member of the community first, not a marketer.
Success signal: 50+ signups from a single community post. Organic mentions from people we didn't prompt.
3. Referral Loops (Tertiary — grows with user base)
As the user base grows, built-in sharing mechanics compound organic acquisition.
Mechanics:
- Ally invites: Invite a friend to be your accountability partner (deeplink with pre-populated relationship) — shipped v2.3 (2026-05-22)
- Community invites: Share a community invite link externally
- Achievement sharing: Share streak milestones, badge unlocks, and goal completions to social platforms (shareable cards with OG meta tags — already shipped)
- "Shared streak" mechanic (shipped v3.9): mutual daily check-in streak with an ally, inspired by Duolingo's Friend Streaks. Both partners earn +25 XP per mutual check-in, with milestone celebrations at 7/30/100/365 days. All-time best streak tracked and displayed conditionally on the dashboard widget.
Success signal: K-factor > 0.3 (each user brings 0.3 additional users). Invite-to-signup conversion > 20%.
How This Evolves
| Scale | Acquisition Focus |
|---|---|
| 0-1K users | ASO + community seeding. Manual, founder-led. Every user matters. |
| 1K-10K users | Referral loops kick in. Goal template discovery surfaces content. ProductHunt momentum. |
| 10K-100K users | Organic flywheel: templates → discovery → signups → more templates. Consider content/SEO. |
| 100K+ users | Evaluate paid acquisition. Partnership channels (corporate wellness, HR platforms). |
Competitive Moat
What becomes defensible over time — and what we need to actively protect.
Structural Moats (Can't Be Copied Without Corporate Restructuring)
PBC + privacy commitments. Our legal structure ensures that user wellbeing can never be sacrificed for shareholder returns. No ads, no data selling, free forever for individuals — these aren't policies, they're charter obligations. A competitor would need to restructure their entire company to make the same enforceable promise. Patagonia and Allbirds proved this resonates with consumers; we're proving it for consumer software.
Network Moats (Grow Stronger With Each User)
Community and accountability relationships. The more allies, accountability partners, and community connections a user builds, the harder it is to leave. This isn't lock-in by design (data is always exportable) — it's organic switching cost. Habitica's data confirms that party/community membership is the strongest predictor of long-term retention.
Goal template ecosystem. As users create and share goal templates, content network effects emerge. Popular templates surface in discovery, driving new user activation. Template creators get attribution and community status. This flywheel is self-reinforcing.
Data Moats (Improve With Time)
Personal goal history. Years of goal progress, streaks, mood data, journal entries, and achievements create a personal dataset that's exportable (PBC principle) but emotionally hard to abandon. It's your record of becoming who you wanted to be.
AI Coach quality. Models trained on goal completion patterns unique to Objectuve get better with more data. Aggregated, anonymized insights about what coaching approaches drive completion in which contexts — this data doesn't exist anywhere else. The Coach improves for everyone as each individual uses it.
Complexity Moats (Hard to Build All at Once)
Gamification depth + social + AI. Our competitive analysis of 18 apps across 4 categories confirmed: no competitor combines deep gamification (10 ranks, 23 badges across 4 rarity tiers, dual streaks with earned freeze tokens, XP curves), social accountability (communities with health scoring, content moderation, role-based permissions), AND AI coaching in one product. Building any one of these is months of work. Building all three well, integrated, and ethically — that's the moat.
See feature matrix for the cross-competitor comparison.
Brand Moats (Compound Over Time)
Anti-social philosophy as identity. "We optimize for goals achieved, not time-on-app" is more than a tagline — it's a product architecture decision (screen time nudges, ~10 min sessions, no infinite scroll). In a market where every app is fighting for more attention, our restraint is our differentiator. Trust compounds; engagement tricks don't.
Threats We're Watching
| Threat | Timeframe | Severity | Our Response |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atoms (James Clear) expands | 6-12 months | Medium | Distribution via 15M+ book audience. We differentiate on gamification depth and social layer. |
| New AI-native habit apps | 6-12 months | Medium | Head start on gamification + social is the moat. AI alone isn't enough. |
| Apple adds habits to Health | 1-3 years | High | Fitness Rings could extend to habits. Our community, gamification depth, and cross-platform presence differentiate. |
| Gamification commoditizes | 1-3 years | Medium | Surface-level gamification (basic badges) won't replicate our progression system depth (ranks, rarity, freeze tokens, dual streaks). |
| Duolingo enters general habit tracking | 1-3 years | High | No current signals, but they have the engagement engine. We're building the community and goal-specific depth they'd lack. |

Metrics to Instrument Later
These are critical but premature to track before traction. Instrument them as scale demands.
Unit Economics (Post-Revenue)
- CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) — What does each user cost to acquire, by channel? Even organic has costs (ASO time, content creation, community seeding effort).
- LTV (Lifetime Value) — Different per tier: free users cost infrastructure, Supporters contribute $4/mo, Teams contribute $5/user/mo. LTV:CAC ratio should exceed 3:1.
- Infrastructure cost per MAU — GCP spend (Cloud Run, Cloud SQL, Firebase) divided by MAU. Critical for knowing when revenue covers costs.
- Payback period — Months until a Teams customer's revenue covers acquisition cost. Target: < 6 months.
Growth Dynamics (Post-1K Users)
- Viral coefficient (K-factor) — New users per existing user. K > 1 means organic exponential growth. Track invite sends, invite conversions, and referral attribution.
- Seasonal patterns — Goal-setting spikes in January and September. Dips in summer. Plan marketing pushes around natural demand.
- Cohort retention curves — Group users by signup month, track retention over time. Most important chart in the business — tells you if the product is getting better or worse.
- Activation rate — % of signups reaching the "aha moment" (likely: creates goal + completes first check-in within 48h). Optimize ruthlessly.
Product Health (Post-Launch)
- Time to value — Signup → first goal → first check-in → first streak. Every extra step is a drop-off point.
- Mobile vs. Web split — Platform-specific retention rates reveal where to invest.
- Push notification opt-in rate — Critical for re-engagement. Industry average: ~50% iOS, ~80% Android.
- App store keyword rankings — Track positions for target keywords via AppFollow or Sensor Tower.
Strategic Considerations
Product Strategy
- Internationalization — Spanish, Portuguese, and French cover large mobile-first markets with strong self-improvement cultures. Multiplies TAM significantly.
- Accessibility — WCAG 2.1 AA compliance (shipped in Phase 3). Both a moral imperative (PBC) and a market expansion (corporate wellness programs often require it).
- Wearable integrations — Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin for habit check-ins without opening the phone. Reduces friction to near-zero. Deepens the anti-social value prop.
- Offline-first — Check-ins must work without connectivity and sync when back online. Critical for mobile-first users and international expansion.
- Privacy controls — "Go it alone" mode and private profiles. Users who want accountability without social exposure.
- Data export — Full export of goals, events, mood logs, journal entries. PBC obligation and trust differentiator.
Business Strategy
- Partnership channels — Corporate wellness programs (Virgin Pulse, Limeade), HR platforms (BambooHR, Gusto), coaching bodies (ICF), educational institutions. Each is a Teams distribution channel.
- Platform integrations — Cross-pollinate with other streak-oriented apps (Duolingo, Chess.com) to reinforce the consistency philosophy across domains.
- Content/template ecosystem — User-generated goal templates as a growth flywheel. Popular templates surface in discovery, driving new user activation.
- Lifetime Supporter — One-time $100+ contribution for mission investors. See pricing philosophy.
- PBC impact reporting — Annual public benefit report as a marketing asset: transparent impact data builds trust and brand.
- Fundraising — Bootstrap until metrics warrant raising. If 500+ MAU with 30%+ 7-day retention by Q4 2026, evaluate converting LLC to Delaware C-Corp PBC and raising $150K-$300K pre-seed. See fundraising analysis.
Risks to Monitor
- Engagement ceiling — Anti-social design intentionally limits session time. Monitor whether this constrains growth metrics.
- Gamification fatigue — Streaks and badges can feel hollow over time. The progression system needs ongoing evolution (seasonal events, progressive badge tiers, community challenges). See streak science for mitigation strategies.
- Single-founder risk — 2-3 person team means key-person dependency. Document processes, maintain code quality, avoid single points of failure.
- Platform dependency — App Store/Play Store policies can change. Maintain the web app as a first-class experience.
